You can create an RTI alert to respond to changes in resource metrics. RTI Alerts can optionally enable RTI lightweight profiling or deep-dive tracing for an RTI Collector for a period of time and gather a snapshot of the diagnostic data. The snapshot data is retained on the management server for download as required.
To create an RTI alert for a resource metric:
  1. Navigate to the resource in the inventory.
  2. Select the Alerts tab
  3. Select the Definitions sub-tab.
  4. Click New.
  5. Specify the alert definition name and other details.
  6. Select the Conditions sub-tab.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Configure the alert condition as needed.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Select the Notifications sub-tab.
  11. Click Add.
  12. Select RTI Alert for the Notification Sender.
  13. Select an action to specify if a timed profile or timed trace should be started followed by a snapshot, or if just a profile or trace snapshot should be taken.
  14. If a timed trace/profile is selected, specify the interval in minutes the profile or trace should cover. Uncheck Unset to modify the value.
  15. Supply the Resource Id, if needed (see below).
  16. Supply the management server user id and password with which the snapshot will be taken, if different from logged in user.
  17. Click OK.
  18. Add Recovery and Dampening as needed.
  19. Click Save to save the definition.
The Resource Id specifies which RTI Collector should perform the profile/trace snapshot. The rules governing the Resource Id parameter are as follows:
  1. If no profile/trace snapshot is needed, no resource id is needed.
  2. If the alert is defined for an RTI Collector or RTI Transaction resource metric, no resource id is needed--the enclosing RTI Collector will perform the profile/trace snapshot.
  3. If the alert is defined for a different resource metric, the resource id of the RTI Collector to perform the profile/trace snapshot must be provided.
If the alert is to perform multiple profile/trace snapshots (on different RTI Collectors), a comma-separated list of RTI Collector resource ids must be provided. The RTI Collector resource id syntax is as follows:
[platform-resource-id/]collector-resource-id
where platform-resource-id is the name of the platform, and collector-resource-id is the name of the RTI Collector, both as shown in the JBoss ON server. The platform-resource-id only needs to be specified if it is different from the enclosing platform of the resource defining the alert. Below is a an example from an RTI Alert notification under RHQ:
RTI Alert Notification in RHQ 4.0
When one or more Alerts are listed in the Alerts, Definitions section for a platform, and you have driven some transactions through that platform's application which has satisfied an Alert condition and so triggered an Alert notification, it will be listed in the Alerts, History view. This is the first place to go to see whether an alerting condition has occurred.
